Commentaries based on cataloging over 300 sales and 51 years in numismatics - since 1928
(including THE LARGEST A N A. SALE EVER HELD-1977)
The recent fluctuations in gold and silver bullion confirmed the steady upward
pressures forcing the rapid rise in value of numismatic coins and currency, regardless
of whether the bullion related coins rose or fell. With a limited supply and ever increas-
ing demand, it appears that it is not a question whether they will increase in value but
only at what rate. The demand seems insatiable with IRA, KEOGH and PENSION plans
siphoning off much of the better grade material, preventing their reappearance on the
market for some years. Nearly every time we pass up a coin or note as 'Too high", we
soon find ourselves paying more, if we are fortunate enough to have the opportunity to
acquire a similar one.
The FOUNDATION FOR NUMISMATIC EDUCATION, INC. had its annual meeting
at the ANA convention with chairman A.M. Kagin and president Abe Kosoff at the
head table. The doubts of some that the aims could be achieved were happily replaced
with confidence in our future. A brochure made up by Sanford Durst and David Ganz
was distributed at the convention to those we thought might be interested in being a
part of advancing numismatics to the arts and science (as well as hobby) to which we
feel it is entitled. Since so many people seem interested, we agreed to reproduce the
brochure in this catalog, thereby enabling a greater number to be involved or at least
keep informed.
Douglas Ball reported that the first project of the Foundation need not result in pro-
fits. The crucial factor was to produce a credible work, beyond criticism. He proposed
a manuscript, The American Revolution: A Descriptive History of Fiscal Paper by
William G. Anderson, a New York historian. President Abe Kosoff favored the proposed
project and chairman Art Kagin expressed hope that the University of Georgia may co-
sponsor the work.
Various projects were suggested by John Pittman, Sanford Durst, Don Kagin, Jack
Veffer, Admiral Dodson, Richard Yeoman, Adna Wilde, Yasha Beresiner and
secretary Maurice Rosen. Treasurer Eldrige Jones was pleased to receive word of the
$5,000 contribution by the Kagins (Art and Don) to start the fund raising. The 20 at-
tendants left the meeting with the impression that the Foundation was "on its way"
to realizing its goals.

TERMS OF SALE
This is a public and mail bid sale
governed by the following terms:
1. All coins and currency are sold unreserved to the highest bidder.
2. Your bids, which represent your limits, will be executed without a commission
charge.
3. Mail bidders are responsible for any errors made in their bid sheets. We cannot ac-
cept responsibility for your errors, either in lot numbers or bids.
4. Bidders must establish credit with Kagin's for the total amount of their bids. Those
bidding for the first time must supply complete and satisfactory credit references, and
a deposit equal to 25% of the total amount of their bids. Deposits will be applied to
lots purchased and any unused portion will be refunded after the sale.
5. Bidders who are unknown to us, who wish to pick up their coins at the sale must
make prior arrangements with Kagin's.
6. Payments for lots must be made when the coins are picked up or when the invoice
is received.
7. All coins are guaranteed to be genuine and as described.
8. Lots purchased by floor buyers CANNOT be returned.
9. Lots purchased by mail bidders cannot be returned without our written permission.
10. All claims for adjustments must be made in writing within 5 days following the
receipt of the coins or invoice. Late remittance for purchases is cause for negating this
privilege.
11. Title remains with Kagin's Numismatic Auctions, Inc. until full payment is received
by Kagin's.
12. All lots delivered in Maryland are subject to Maryland Sales Tax Laws. Postage and
insurance will be charged on lots mailed.
13. If there is a dispute between bidders, the auctioneer will determine the final award.
14. If there are duplicate bids, the lot will be awarded to the first bid received by
Kagin's.
15. All mailed bids must be received in Des Moines 3 days prior to sale date.
16. All bidders must be of legal age (18) or have their bid sheet signed by an individual
of legal age, accepting responsibility for payment.
17. Any lot determined to be inaccurate may be withdrawn from the sale at any time.

HOW TO BID
What to Bid On:
As you read through the catalog for the first time, record the numbers of
all the lots you are interested in on a worksheet. If you are interested in
specific types of coins, be sure to check the catalog index.
How Much to Bid:
The price you bid is determined by you. You must remember the value
that you place on the coins. Check the values listed in the catalog and
decide what you are willing to pay. You should bid generously on the lots
you strongly wish to obtain. If there are some lots you would like to have 'if
the price is right', then you may want to place nominal bids on those lots.
Because a number of collectors choose to bid on many lots, the number of
successful bids will be relatively small. This is controlled by a very active
market. You can safely extend your bidding (and take advantage of a
'bargain') by placing a dollar total limit on your bids. Should your total be
reached before all your bids are executed, we will then terminate your bid-
ding.
Remember that your bids are limits. It is possible, and quite often does
occur, that you will succeed in purchasing a lot for less than your bid since
we start the floor bidding at about 5-10% above the second highest mail
bid. Example: You bid $500.00 on the lot and the next highest mail bid is
$400.00, we start the lot bid at $425.00. If there are no bids from the floor,
you will then be awarded the lot at $425.00 - or if the floor bidding stops at
perhaps $450.00 or $475.00 then you will receive the lot at a small advance
above the top floor bid. If bidding continues above the $500.00, then that
floor bidder will be awarded the lot.
How to Fill Out the Bid Sheet:
On the Bid Sheet you will observe that there are two different column
headings. Lots and Bids. When you decide on the lots you want to bid on,
enter the lot numbers under the proper column and the maximum amounts
you are willing to pay for those lots in the proper column.

is the system that has been used with great success by sophisticated
numismatists for many years and now adopted by the A.N.A. We use the follow-

Proof and Specimen are methods of manufacture, not
grades. All of our Proofs, Specimens, and Proof-Likes are
graded in the same manner as our business strikes (ex-
amples: Proof-55, Proof-60, CHOICE Proof-63, GEM
Proof-65, SUPERB GEM Proof 67).

Well worn but all devices legible.

Fairly well circulated but quite legible.
